To that end, let’s go back a few years to when God first
spoke to my heart and convicted me of my need to be a Christian.
Sometimes I wish I could say that my testimony is one that
resulted in a dramatic change of behavior; that I was a terrible person, had
been in jail 10 times and used drugs like cotton candy. But, that is far
from my upbringing. I was raised in church from the time of my birth. I
scarcely missed a Sunday. My family was at church “every time the doors were
opened”, or so it seemed. But, a lesson that I learned early on was that if
a cat had kittens in an oven, you wouldn’t call them biscuits. In other
words, just because I was in church all the time didn’t mean that I was
Heaven bound. Many people warm pews every Sunday for an hour or so, and they
are just as lost as those who never darken the doorway of a house of
worship.
When I was 11 years old, while watching a Billy Graham crusade on
television, God spoke to me and told me that I needed to ask Christ into my
heart and that He alone was the only way to Heaven. Not giving money to
charities, not doing community service, not attending church all the time,
only Christ and He alone make it possible to come to Heaven. Though I never
thought of myself as a ‘bad person’, God’s word said something very
different. In the book of Mark, God said that there is none that is good,
not even one. Only God is good (Mark 10:18). Well, if only God is good that
poses a problem. A problem for you and for me. How can anyone who is not
good get into Heaven? Jesus speaking in John 10:28 says, “I give them
eternal life, and they will never perish; no one can take them out of my
hand.” Re-read that last verse. Who is it that gives eternal life? Jesus.
What part did you play in that to earn it? Uh, that would be nothing. It is
a free gift of God because He so loved you that He sent His one and only Son
so that you wouldn’t perish but would live forever (see John 3:16).
Why did God need to send Jesus? Because Romans 3:23 says that ALL have
sinned and come short of the glory of God. The Bible says that God is
perfect. That the one thing that God is incapable of doing, is sinning. It
is not His nature to do so. God cannot allow someone to come into His Heaven
that is not perfect, just as He is. God also tells us in the book of Romans
that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. Jesus
came to be a substitutionary, sacrificial death for us.
You see, your worship attendance may help you grow in a better understanding
of God. Your service may well please God. But you can never satisfy God. He
is satisfied, fully satisfied, with the work of His Son on the cross. The
only contribution you make to your salvation is the acceptance of Christ
into your life. The work has already been completed.
Let me invite you today to sit down with God’s word to us, his Bible. Start
reading anywhere you wish. If you are searching for answers about who Jesus
is and what His plan is for you, I would recommend you start reading in the
New Testament in the book of John. Following that I would recommend Romans.
The reason I suggest spending time in the scripture is that this is the
primary means that God uses to reveal Himself to us today, although He is
never limited by any means to speak to us as He chooses.
I hope you aren’t interested in my opinion on what it takes to be a
Christian. Because in truth, neither my opinions nor yours really matter.
What does matter is what God’s word says. Therein lies the eternal truth.
That a timeless Creator chose to encapsulate a story incased in time that
would cost Him all of Heaven because He wanted you to one day be where He
is. He has made the way for you to come home to Him. And He has given you
the choice. What will you do with Jesus?
